At CoLab Disability Solutions, we are always looking for ways to connect our community with opportunities to influence the systems that impact their lives. We’re excited to share a unique chance for First Nations people with disabilities to step up as leaders and change-makers. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is calling for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the First Nations Reference Group (FNRG), which will be advising the Independent Advisory Council (IAC) to the NDIS.
The FNRG plays a critical role in ensuring that First Nations people with disabilities are heard, especially when it comes to improving culturally safe services and support. As a member of this group, you’ll work with others who share your lived experience, and your insights will help shape policies and strategies that affect First Nations communities.
Why Join the First Nations Reference Group?
If you’re passionate about advocating for yourself and your community, this is your opportunity to make a significant impact. Members of the FNRG will provide expert advice directly to the IAC to help ensure that:
First Nations people with disabilities can live the way they choose
They have access to culturally safe and appropriate services
Communities are empowered to participate fully in society
The work of the FNRG will also support updates to the NDIA's First Nations Strategy Implementation Plan, ensuring that key voices are heard and real change is made.
Who Are They Looking For?
The NDIS is seeking 10-12 First Nations people with disabilities who are well-connected within their communities. To join, you must:
Be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
Live with a disability
Be committed to meeting regularly and sharing your insights
Have a passion for community representation, without representing an organization
You’ll have the chance to contribute to meaningful discussions and solutions that directly impact your life and the lives of others in your community.
What’s Involved?
The role requires monthly meetings, some of which will be face-to-face, and others held online. Your travel and accommodation costs will be covered, and you’ll receive a sitting fee for attending meetings. This ensures that your contributions are valued and that there are no barriers to your participation.
If you’re chosen, your term on the FNRG will last until June 2026, giving you the time to truly engage and make an impact.
How to Apply
Submitting an EOI is easy. You can apply by answering the provided questions in writing, by making a video, or by contacting the NDIS directly for a yarn. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, 29 October 2024.
For more details, reach out to Matthew Berne, First Nations Strategy Branch at NDIA, via mobile: 0456 692 698 or send your EOI application to: Advisorycouncil@ndis.gov.au.
This is a fantastic opportunity for First Nations people with disabilities to shape the future of the NDIS. If you or someone you know is passionate about advocating for First Nations communities and disability rights, don’t miss this chance to apply!
Stay tuned to CoLab Disability Solutions for more updates and opportunities to get involved. Together, we can lead the way for a more inclusive and equitable future.
